President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and flag bearer for the National Resistance Movement party has expressed willingness to extend a presidential pardon to jailed former Toro Kingdom Prime Minister John Sanyu Katuramu.
Katuramu was convicted and sentenced to death in 1999 after masterminding the murder of Toro Prince Happy Kijanagoma. Katuramu lost appeals both at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
During a rally at Boma grounds in fort portal on Tuesday, supporters asked President Museveni to pronounce himself on his status of forgiving Katuramu.
The president who first said was uncomfortable discussing the matter at a campaign rally later told the crowds that he had advised Katuramu’s wife to reconcile with the family of Kijanangoma.
Museveni stated that he had no problem with releasing Katuramu if at all his family and the one of Kijanangoma reconciled.
In July 2012, during an exclusive interview with Sunday Vision Katuramu who said he was a born-again Christian, expressed remorse for circumstances that led to his imprisonment and asked the people of Toro and Uganda to forgive him.
